Competition Scoring

Overview

The format for the Year 5 and Year 6 competitions will remain consistent. Results from both the individual and team rounds will be kept confidential until the award ceremony. We believe that revealing standings prematurely can be disheartening for teams, particularly if they learn they are in last place after the first day.

Scoring Consistency

We will not alter the scoring structure to enable more schools to have a chance of winning going into the last round. Maintaining consistency and transparency in scoring is essential to the integrity of the competition.

Individual Maths Competition

The individual competition will consist of a single written paper. Scores will be ranked from highest to lowest, with medals awarded as follows:

  • Approximately the top 5% will receive a gold medal.
  • The next 6-15% will receive a silver medal.
  • The next 15-25% will receive a bronze medal.

These percentages may be adjusted based on the overall performance, and we will have additional medals available for ties in scores.

Scoring Methodology

Assuming 50 schools are participating, each round will be worth 50 points, regardless of the time allocated. Points will be awarded as follows:

  • 1st place: 50 points.
  • 2nd place: 49 points.
  • Last place: 1 point.

If teams tie, they will share points, and the next team will receive points accordingly.

Example Scoring Table

School Name Round Score Number of points
School A 187 50
School B 185 49
School C 184 48
School D 184 48
School E 180 46

To allow us to be more creative with the rounds, there will be no written round for teams. Instead, we will average the top two individual scores from each school for the team score.

Example Written Paper Scoring Table

Individual Name School Name Test Score Combined Average Team Points
A School A 95 92.5 50
B School A 75
C School A 90
D School A 12
E School B 85 84 49
F School B 83
G School B 82
H School B 81
I School C 96 70.5 48
J School C 33
K School C 24
L School C 45

In this example, although Child I from School C won the individual competition, the overall team score was impacted by the other team members’ lower scores. Conversely, Child D from School A had the lowest individual score but did not affect their team’s overall performance.

Final Ranking

At the end of the competition, we will total all points to rank the teams. In the event of a tie, the following criteria will be used:

  1. Number of rounds won.
  2. Number of rounds placed second, and so on.

Overall School Champion

If you send two teams, you will have the opportunity to win the overall competition. We will combine the rankings from Year 5 and Year 6 to determine the overall winner.

Example Combined Ranking Table

School Name Year 5 Overall Ranking Year 6 Overall Ranking Combined Ranking Score Final Position
School A 1 10 5.5 2
School B 24 1 12.5 3
School C 5 4 4.5 1

In case of a tie, we will again use the criteria of rounds won and placement. Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to an exciting competition!
